My Experience of {Duolingo} so Far 😎

Going into Duolingo was a big leap for me. Not only had I not learned a new language since my school days, but this was an online app which essentially meant I had to learn and teach myself. There is not tutor, and you are guided through each lesson in which you have to comprehend and use a foreign language without input. You may have to read, write, speak or place words in the correct order. I can say this though, I have found it fun to use and it has been a surprisingly rewarding experience so far.

My profile (pictured above in a screenshot) shows that I joined in August, and over 3 months I’ve accumulated nearly 9,000 total XP. This is quite significant. My languages are shown as studying German and Russian. If you want to follow my progress and you are also on Duolingo, feel free to follow and I’ll follow back. I primarily focus on German and have only started to use Russian on Duolingo to consolidate things from a book I use. I have reached many milestones already.

It has been easy to use, navigate and recently they updated the learning tree – which I wasn’t too fond of. The app is online or on a phone and can be used anywhere. The lessons take you through various topics, learning all the essentials, except you will not learning it in order, you will build upon what you have learned. So you may learn how to order in a café and then later learn how to speak the full vocabulary of such an event. For example, you order coffee, then later, you learn how to say things like I would like a coffee please. Or I would like a coffee what would you like? This allows progressive learning in a gamified language learning app.

A big bonus is that it is free. I highly recommend this platform (not sponsoring me, although if Duolingo see this they are free to do just that). Over four months my progress has been remarkable and enjoyable. I’m now soaring through units, learning and retaining information more effectively than reading a book. The repetitive speaking system, in which phrases and words are repeatedly shown the same things multiple times, allows better retention.

Russian is a bit more difficult and as such I am using a combination of sources, like books and audio CDs as well. I feel that you could reach a satisfactory beginner level if you worked through all the units – numbered at around 114 for German. I believe from what I have learned so far that completing all of it would mean you are at least B1 level of the CEFR scaling system. However, this would also be dependent on other factors like frequency of learning, interaction with native speakers and general motivation and of course the learner’s ability to actually remember this information and use it.

I’m happy to rate it at 4 stars up to now: there are flaws and the spoken sections of learning leave something to be desired. It is also flawed in that the majority of the scenarios that are demonstrated in the language you are learning is simply unrealistic.

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Unrealistic scenarios include owls not playing football and dogs reading books. But Duolingo’s fun, childlike characters certainly bring a bit of enthusiasm to the learning process.

The site offers a paid option which removes adverts. Aside from this it is now integrating the stories system into the learning, so a milestone might consist of reading a story in the native language you are learning, as opposed to being optional as it was before. This is a good, progress step to keep it mixed up. You also have access to thousands of lessons offered on the site from as low as $2 for an hour. I believe it’s set up for schools too.

Overall, and this is a brief conclusion, it is worth the time. But you need to stick at it daily to actually progress. I cannot imagine anyone progressing beyond introductions, family and dining etc. if they chose one lesson a week. They’d get bored. Consistency and integration into you own life is key. Take the lessons into your real-world experiences to begin to apply the vocabulary to real world situations. Travel or interaction with native speakers is also highly recommended for better learning.

Can I Take Your Order? Place your order if you dare (3)

Welcome back to Cafe Bleu. The last time we were here was back in April! Back then we had celebrated receiving a new 4 star rating! I was so excited and proud of my staff that I increased wages significantly. What followed was amazing, so I will break it down for you.

Following a staff meeting, and then a subsequent meeting after raising wages, a team member steps forward and offers some suggestions, and I am impressed with what she says so I give her a promotion to team leader. Her name is Anna. She recommended the following changes:

1# To cater for a wider variety of guests I should add a vegetarian and vegan option onto the menu. So I did! Everything on the menu has a vegan equivalent and I added some individual items which you can see below. We saw a rapid increase in customers as word spread that we now had vegan food.

2# To change the look of the menu, because it was too blue and the flowers at the bottom meant nothing. Initially I disliked this, so decided out of fear of change to make a ‘joke’ menu, which looked completely awful. What do you know, her suggestion to change actually caused me to make a design which customers loved! They said ‘it reminds them of a proper café.’ I cannot complain, Anna, thank you.

3# Add more food items to the list, to increase profit and this idea was already on my mind, the menu was so small, but I intended to keep our menu integrated into the new one. Yes profit was being made on the small menu, but having more options allowed more choice.

Look at the new bloody menu below! The staff are doing so well. We have a clean, highly regulated café with efficient staff, good hygiene procedures – we got 5 star on hygiene – and excellent customer service and feedback. After creating a box for anonymous feedback we found that 89% of visitors would come again, and that a whopping 98% had a nice time and enjoyed their food! What does that tell you?

We love to chat to new people, and have set up a dedicated booth for people to discuss their mental health, or any worries they may have and this is led by our newest addition to Café Bleu James. He’s a qualified psychologist and also works here, helping to clean tables and serve food and drinks.

You can get a starter, main meal and dessert for under or around £15 if you wanted. Where else will you find such excellent quality food at affordable prices?!

Typewriting & The Writer

I have decided to engage online remember? I used to own a typewriter and wrote a few stories on it. When I moved last year I did not bring it with me. Now, I want one again. I checked online, etsy and found that 1960s light blue Olympia for a couple hundred quid. Rather expensive. Unless it works flawlessly then you might be better using pen and paper or even just, you know, your laptop. Actually I just checked and cannot see it on the first page anymore. It was expensive compared to the others, but ironic is that my old typewriter was Olympia… stupid to not bring with me perhaps.

Writing for me has become a digital experience. I use a laptop. As for making time to write, I always try to write something everyday, including on this blog, which I thoroughly enjoy. Plus, it is in line with my own goals and writing ideals, namely to writer everyday and write to targets. You might like this post by Writers Digest about making time to write. It touches on the idea that you can productively ‘waste time’ by blogging. I suppose this is true, if you are an aspiring novelist then blogging won’t help that. I have seen authors on WordPress who can do both which is great. I am one of them.

If I ever go back to a typewriter though I know I will enjoy it too much. The downsides: no spellcheck, sometimes the formatting can get a little screwy, and no choice of text colour. I experience a red/black ribbon, and that was all. It was also quite noisy, which I suspect was due to age. There were sticking issues too. But they provide more creativity I believe, they allow creative expression to flourish as you are not distracted by the idea of opening ‘new tabs’ or watching porn or ordering online food. They are excellent, however, laptops have become the norm.

As a writer and one who does intend to publish further, I find the whole process incredibly rewarding. There will be times of procrastination and that is when you grab a bottle of red wine or perhaps a whiskey and cigar, pretending you are cool, knowing deep down you are the boss of your own destiny.

If you enjoyed reading, please like, comment, follow and reblog! Have a wonderful life!

Veteran

It was V day yesterday,

he came to the fountains in the center of town,

decorated in an assortment of medals,

his skin is now wrinkled,

but his uniform immaculate,

he waves from his wheelchair,

as youth struggle to understand what is happening,

they announce his triumph,

that he fought back in the day,

it was time to go, and I said,

‘Thank you for your service, without you, we’d all be dead.’
