Dead Set

Dead set on improving my writing. Following a stricter, albeit tougher schedule. My life has been overhauled since the new year.

So far, I’ve written a couple of short stories, part of a long work of fiction likely to become a novelette and am in the midst of a new novel. Great. Right?

Well, yes. In a word. Actually doing the work in this ‘work’ manner is a challenge. You see, before I used to slip writing inbetween breaks, early mornings, evening, night etc. Now it’s become a daily ritual. My writing is no longer a past time. It is still a hobby but one that I now take to a whole new level.

Passed the hurdle of newbie, beyond the scope of aspiring author and into the realm of something around full time. This is not a choice or event that I believed would happen this year. I made the new year decision to simply go at it like a full time job. And, in the payoff I’ve been more productive than ever. I didn’t want it to replace working, but it has.

Now, the task of actually writing stories people read and enjoy. I believe the market for the stories I’ve already published to be massive, but acquiring the readers, traffic and reviews is the hard part. Marketing.

Quite literally an update on my writing. A chance for me to say how happy it is making me. Truly. Follow your passion. They say you never work a day in you life when your job is your passion. Or something like that.

Starting Now: New Years Goals

You get to build your perfect space for reading and writing. What’s it like?

Hello and welcome to my site! This is a two part blog post. First I will deal with my new year goals and talk you through why they mean something to me. Second I will talk about the ideal writing and reading space, and why they are different places.

I’ve already mentioned that in the new year I want to publish some more stories. I think this is important for me because first of all I enjoy writing stories and to share them with the world is a way to be a part of a bigger community. It also helps me to increase my likely hood of becoming a well known author – which is something I want. I want people to know a few stories by me, and to enjoy them. I write primarily horror with particular attention to zombie fiction.

At least if I publish a few more stories – I have two that I want to release by spring – then I will also have had more practice. I don’t believe I could ever stop creating stories. As for how many I want to publish in total next year – I guess I want to publish more – that also depends. I am edging toward shorter novella fiction lately.

Perfect writing space?

Well no. Just like working in progress on your novel, you always work on your writing space. Maybe a desk would work. It does for me occasionally. I use a soft leather desk chair, which folds out so you can lay down. My desk isn’t particularly comfortable to rest arms on though. I like to sit on the cough. I suppose a comfortable writing space is the first step to building a perfect writing place. But there’s more to it…

… it might involve putting on some music in the background or making a brew or favourite drink for your writing session. These are factors too. They influence mindset when writing. Perfect writing space is the whole – everything you do – during a writing session. You might dance before, go for a walk during a break or even make a few phone calls, use the internet etc. I know I’m relaxed when I can write for an hour straight without stopping. If I have trouble then I usually switch up my writing location.

Reading is a different matter. I have to be able to sink back into a comfortable chair to read. If I’m in a café I’ll simply dip my head low into a book and focus on that and it helps me focus. I can read most places sitting down, but not in loud busy places where it is more difficult.

Five Essential Writing Tips to Better Story Writing

You’ve nailed a concept, plot, character or dilemma and formed a vision of a beautiful story in your mind. You have it planned, or perhaps are waiting to unleash it without planning anything. I want you to finish your story and enjoy the process. From my own writing I’ve found five essential writing tips that will considerably improve your story writing skills!

  1. BE OPEN TO CHANGE – Just because you’ve planned a story it does not mean you cannot change the plot, characters or direction. Being open to change is really the number 1 tip you must take on board when creating fiction! Always be open to change, and feel free to change your story or the elements. Nothing is worse than being stuck in a chapter confused as to where to take the story because your planning hasn’t worked out, or the story simply went another way!
  2. REVIEW YOUR CHARACTERS AND EVENTS REGULARLY – Be sure that you have understood your characters and what happens to them to make sure that inconsistencies don’t exist; such as Jane with blonde hair turning into a red headed man called John. Don’t be afraid of taking time to comb through a chapter for these little cracks in story either, it may save you the confusing editing process where you discover someone has grown several feet or has managed to teleport across country with no explanation whatsoever.
  3. HAVE THE END GOAL IN MIND – Always, when writing, be in review of your ultimate end goals or climax. Are you working toward that? Are you getting side tracked and possibly creating a completely different story? If you have a clear end goal – which comes from good planning – then you will write your plot, characters and story in that direction. Sure you might improvise elements of the story or a chapter or two away from the central plot, but at the end of the day distraction shows you lack direction in your own story. I should know.
  4. WRITE FOR YOURSELF – Ideally always. Many writers and published authors will say write to the market or for a particular audience, but this will cause you to quickly lose your honesty and soul. You’ll find it harder. Write the story how you want, for you. Worry about the opinion of others later.
  5. EDIT YOUR STORY MULTIPLE TIMES – This will give you the chance to do multiple rewrites if needed, to comb out mistakes and such and to actually review your own story in full. After a first initial draft you should aim to go through to do the initial rewriting followed by a copy edit of the manuscript. You can pay an editor to do this for you, and then work with their suggestions. Reviewing and editing allows you sometimes to take a great story and make it shine like gold. It really can make the difference, allowing you to smooth out sentences and such for easier reading. You might find you delete a lot too. Ideally you’d go through two to three times minimum.*

*A point on the editing; writers tend to go for a developmental edit followed by the line edit, followed by a spelling and punctuation check last. After that they get a proof read.* This is by no means something you have to pay for. You can do all of it yourself, and plenty of resources exist to find beta-readers etc. that can help the process considerably.

Thank you for reading this short, important post. I’d love to hear if you have any tips you’d share yourself. Of course one unwritten rule is that you should have fun. So create the story and enjoy writing it!

10 Page a Day Challenge

Good morning community!

It’s a frosty -2 this morning with plenty of cold winds coming in to. Reminds me of a typical winter day! I really do hope it snows properly this year.

Since last night I’ve been thinking about my reading, more specifically the page count. I don’t usually count the pages I read – but I used to – and since becoming re-aware of my habits I decided I would.

Let me explain. Last week I was enthralled by Angels and Demons by Dan Brown and had read 50+ pages in one sitting. This was good, as usually I’d read little more than 30 pages (at a guess). So my average had increased. yet with another historical fiction book I only managed maybe 2 – 3 pages at a time, each day. I want to read more of that one in each sitting by the way!

I then realised my reading time had improved significantly. Taking the 50 pages I’d read over the course of one sitting, which at the time was around 2 hours 30 minutes, I knew that this was an improvement. I’m usually a slow reader. Anyway my eyes were following the words more easily and pages were turning quicker. The process felt less strained and more enjoyable and I found myself not wanting to put the book down. This could also be due to the fact it’s interesting.

I hear people say they can’t focus enough to read; but I say this, you can read if you practice. Yes, practice reading by reading. By the time you’ve read ten pages I guarantee you will find it easier. But I say that lightly, you need to do it daily to see an improvement in concentration. Reading things you enjoy can be of significant help as you won’t feel forced to pull yourself through a difficult chapter.

Let me introduce the 10 Page a Day Challenge

It’s easy and effective. You’ll find that at the end of the week doing the 10 pages a day – and hopefully a lot more – that your reading concentration and focus has improved ten fold. You’ll be able to navigate large chunks of text in minutes.

Who’s this for?

Ideally those who struggle with reading, those who find it hard to enjoy books or those who don’t read in general. I recommend choosing a good thick book targeted for your age, that way your more likely to meet the wide range of vocabulary expected in other books of the same genre.

I read every day and find the benefits are above and beyond what people expect. It’s winter soon and you’ll be grateful to be in bed under the warm blanket with a book, or even beside a warm fireplace. It’s great for tackling a huge social issue – loneliness – and can (I believe) be super awesome at making you feel better.

So there you go! A 10 Page a Day Challenge and it doesn’t matter if you read more. Read to your hearts delight. I am sure I have some reading to do … by for now!

Christmas tis the Season to be Jolly

What are your feelings about eating meat?

This Christmas you’ll be tucking into some warm, succulent turkey I imagine! Although, nothing wrong with cooking any large bird, or having any alternative meats!

I’ve been venturing to different areas, some more decorated and in the spirit than others. I have my list of go to places for a meal or drink – those which are nice, have a Christmas theme going and are generally happy in nature. Unfortunately, where I live there isn’t many decorations around the town. Only a little. But I can always travel which is what I have been doing!

If you are looking for gifts to buy people, I’m sure you will have plenty of options. I found this site to give me some ideas – https://www.notonthehighstreet.com/christmas

Then there is the Etsy website. It’s full of great gifts and for reasonable prices. https://www.etsy.com/uk/market/christmas_gifts?utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_term=christmas%20gifts_e&utm_campaign=Search_UK_Nonbrand_BNG_ENG_Holiday_Christmas-Gifting_New_holiday22_&utm_ag=Christmas%2BGifts&utm_custom1=k_7a3af9be58f812a1eaf29a32ea5772d7_k&utm_content=bing_420477294_1309518711678861_81844994200993_kwd-81845108055951:aud-808167869:loc-188_c_&utm_custom2=420477294&msclkid=7a3af9be58f812a1eaf29a32ea5772d7

The time of year to relax, have fun and get into the spirit. Maybe you should try out a Christmas market. I’ve been trying to find one that stands out. As I said I have my preferences for locations to visit, but they never have a massive market. Some places have mostly food stalls. My recent trip to the Intu Trafford Center revealed a small festive fairground with ice skating which I did not know about! I will be going back at some point.

I also hope to be able to do some skiiing over this winter. I doubt it will be on a real mountain, but I nonetheless want to. That’s a great day out if you are struggling with things to do with the family. I’m hoping to spark some creativity in you by sharing this post. A lot of people are alone and struggle at Christmas. Why not go out and do it yourself? What I mean is that if you are struggling for ideas on what to do you should just do it yourself because you will probably have a good day.

There are loads of Christmas pantomimes on this time of year and a load of Christmas themed shows. Not to mention the markets in the cities, although primarily food based are still a good way to socialise if you are lonely.

Don’t feel pressured into being happy and cheery though. You aren’t doing anything wrong by simply not having a good time. People struggle, it’s human nature.

Penguin Classics

When you think of publishers you probably think of all the big names, including Penguin Random House. Before we go any further you might like to peruse the complete list yourself here https://www.penguin.co.uk/classicslist

Today I want to lay out those books for you. You may find the list useful. It is also a good way to mark down which classics you have yet to read. They say ‘you should read the classics’ but in reality, the majority of people haven’t even read their own mail.

It is not a full and complete list. You will find that there are thousands of books. I will simply list some here which may be appealing to you. 25 listed.

  1. Jane Eyre
  2. Pride and Prejudice
  3. Frankenstein
  4. The Count of Monte Cristo
  5. Wuthering Heights
  6. Dracula

Poem Spotlight!

A special thank you to the R|cardo / C|pher for the wonderful poem titled Lazarus. I’ve read it a few times, and it sticks with me. I also really enjoy the admiring the accompanying artwork. I hope you enjoy the poem as much as I have, along with other works by this prolific, talented poet.

Movie Recommendation

The Bansheess of Inisherin – Starring reuniting cast members Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson once again teaming up with In Bruges director Martin McDonagh in this drama come comedy black fiction movie of a friendship gone sour. https://psychedelicwizard.uk/2022/11/18/banshees-of-inisherin/

https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/the_banshees_of_inisherinRotten Tommatoes rated it a whopping 98%! Worth a watch. A Friday or Saturday night easy to view movie with dark undetones.

Book Recommendation

A Spy Named OrphanThe Enigma of Donald Maclean – Roland Phillips – The true-life account of notorious spy Donald Maclean through World War 2, through the cold war and beyond. Focused on the nefarious ‘Cambridge 5’ spy ring.

An interesting, step by step documentation of the life of Donald Maclean, the British student turned communist fanatic. He infiltrated the highest levels of government, worked with the secret service, the USA, in Cairo and more before finally being found, some couple of decades after his infiltration and double agent status had begun.

During this time, he stole incredible amounts of information and passed it to the soviet state of Russia. Stalin regarded him as his best agent. He betrayed his home country, England because of his disillusionment with capitalism.

A recommended non-fiction book. It is a little light on details however from a broad history point of view does cover a significant amount of time and space, documenting the double agent’s crazy alcohol binged nights and his deadly rage as he grew increasingly uncomfortable living his double life.

There are plenty of espionage novels on the market, and an abundance surrounding WW2 and the Cold War. You can enjoy factual and fictitious writings. An honourable mention would of course be the John Le Carre novel Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy – still superior to a lot of books in the same genre after all this time.

Halloween

Pumpkins and skeletons
black ghoul graveyard foes
bats screech the night down

As a trick or treat I’m offering Survivors Part I as a FREE ebook this Halloween. Grab a copy now. 5 day limited time promotional deal!

Stay Tuned Survivors – Updated book cover & more

As we see the lonesome survivor trek the beach, with the wreckage of some distant building, we wonder how long he has. As Survivors Part I draws you into a small group, it soon tears you apart. The updated cover is more in line with an apocalypse. No zombies however as the thought that the dead are somewhere else, waiting is more frightening.

The original cover will remain in the ebook. It is just the outside cover I changed. I am also hoping that with time I can churn out a physical book with the back cover.

Stay tuned as Part II is well underway and is at this point turning out to be quite the story. I’ve got to admit that it’s going to be a longer story too, unintentionally. I think you’ll be glad in the end it is. There are two main groups. Albeit I originally planned on focusing on one. However, the second group makes things a lot more interesting. The Resistance – a group intent on surviving and building a future is just hit with dilemma after dilemma. Our hope is that they will survive to live another day, to see a better world beginning.

Will the Resistance conquer the undead or will they too crumble beneath bitter power struggles and the weight of zombies on their doorsteps? Be sure to read an exciting Part I now so you can stay up to date with Beach Town.
